Morgan Stanley has tapped Dr. David Stark to serve as its first chief medical officer as well as its head of HR data and analytics, according to Business Insider.

Via email, a spokeswoman sent the following statement from Morgan Stanley chief human resources officer Jeff Brodsky:

We created this new role, uniting HR data and analytics with the role of chief medical officer, in order to foster innovation in employee wellness and healthcare coverage. Harnessing our HR data, we can achieve better wellness for our employees and address rising healthcare costs. Dave brings to the table a highly unique background and proven track record of success in developing analytical frameworks and finding data-driven insights that will help us in both healthcare and across our talent-related decisions.

Stark comes from Mount Sinai, where he served as an assistant professor at its Icahn School of Medicine. He was also the medical director at the Mount Sinai Institute for Next Generation Healthcare, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Additionally, Stark created Lab100, a hybrid clinic and research lab located at the Icahn School of Medicine. Emphasizing innovation, Lab100 offers patients a comprehensive health assessment and the chance to track their health over time. It also provides researchers with health data and an environment to develop and deploy new products.

Stark earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and also holds a master’s in biomedical informatics from Stanford.

“In this role, I’ll have a unique opportunity to leverage data and technology to unlock value-based care for our employees while also generating data-driven insights to better support our workforce,” he told Business Insider in an emailed statement.

Morgan Stanley isn’t the only employer looking to tackle healthcare.

The Amazon-Berkshire Hathaway-J.P. Morgan trio is aiming to find ways to improve care for the companies’ U.S. employees and their families.

This summer, the yet-unnamed initiative selected a physician — surgeon and author Atul Gawande — as its CEO. Over the years, Gawande, a bit of a 21st Century Renaissance Man, has been outspoken about topics such as wasteful healthcare spendingunnecessary care amping up costs and the slow pace of innovation in healthcare.

Later, the Amazon-Berkshire-JPM venture brought on Jack Stoddard, who previously served as Comcast’s general manager of digital health, as its COO.

Update: This post has been updated to include Jeff Brodsky’s full quote, which was sent to MedCity by a Morgan Stanley spokeswoman.
