Medsphere scoops up emergency department software company

Through the acquisition, Medsphere plans to launch a solution for urgent care centers that capitalizes on its own RCM Cloud offering as well as Wellsoft's technology.

Health IT solutions provider Medsphere has acquired Wellsoft Corporation, a business offering emergency department information systems.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Medsphere Systems Corporation was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Carlsbad, California. Its offerings include CareVue, an EHR system; RCM Cloud, a revenue cycle management solution; and ChartLogic, an ambulatory EHR suite that also includes practice management solutions, medical billing services and patient portal tools.

Based in Somerset, New Jersey, Wellsoft came to be in 1988. It offers software for emergency departments, freestanding emergency centers and urgent care centers. Wellsoft’s EHR for the ED includes features like patient tracking, data management and clinical decision support.

Through the acquisition, Medsphere plans to launch a solution for urgent care centers that capitalizes on its own RCM Cloud offering as well as Wellsoft’s technology.

Wellsoft founder and CEO John Santmann, who will take on the CMIO role at Medsphere, commented in a statement:

This is a very positive and exciting time for Wellsoft. With this merger, we have the opportunity to expand as an integral component of a larger, integrated enterprise solution for healthcare providers. In our early conversations with Medsphere, we also recognized shared goals and values — specifically, a commitment to empowering healthcare organizations without asking them to sacrifice other clinical initiatives by overpaying for healthcare IT. We’re truly excited to join Medsphere.

In other recent Medsphere news, the California company closed a $32 million round of financing in December. It said it planned to use the funding, which came from Morgan Stanley Expansion Capital and East West Bank, to address demand for its solutions and for strategic acquisitions.

Then in early January, Medsphere announced its acquisition of HealthLine Solutions, a Plano, Texas-based company that creates applications so hospitals can manage their supply chain inventory. Financial details of that deal were also not disclosed.
