A Deep-dive Into Specialty Pharma

A specialty drug is a class of prescription medications used to treat complex, chronic or rare medical conditions. Although this classification was originally intended to define the treatment of rare, also termed “orphan” diseases, affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the US, more recently, specialty drugs have emerged as the cornerstone of treatment for chronic and complex diseases such as cancer, autoimmune conditions, diabetes, hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDS.

Bakul Patel, Associate Center Director for Digital Health with the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, will host a town hall-style discussion with audience questions about the regulator on the pre-certification pilot for digital health companies and related issues.

Esther Dyson, Executive Founder of Wellville, will highlight ways to lower healthcare costs by keeping people healthy through new business models that focus on substantial and long-term returns.

Consumerization in healthcare will also be part of the conversation and take the form of a debate on the merits of this trend between Dr. Sachin Jain, CareMore  Health CEO, and Dr. Stephen Klasko, CEO of Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health. Lisa Suennen, managing director with Manatt Health, will moderate.

The evolution of medical devices to wireless instruments that can be used to remotely collect and transmit data will also be a topic of discussion.
Dr. John Chelico, Vice President and Chief Research Information Officer of Northwell Health; Bobby Ghoshal, Chief Technology Officer, ResMed;
Kate Rosenbluth, CEO of Cala Health; and Greg Yap, a Partner with Menlo Ventures will take part in the discussion moderated by Catherine Liao, Blumio Co-founder and CEO.

Additionally, population health, integration of digital health tools in hospitals, precision medicine, how employers are having an impact on healthcare, and the use of blockchain in the pharma industry will also be highlighted at the conference. And of course there will be healthcare startups galore pitching their technology from the medical device, biopharma, diagnostics, health IT, and health IT services sectors. Register today!
