Healthcare Moves: A Monthly Summary of Hires and Layoffs

Here is a selection of recent executive hires, exits, promotions and layoffs occurring across the healthcare industry.

Hires

Amwell hired Mark Hirschhorn as its new chief financial officer. For the past two years, he has served as CEO of TapestryHealth. In the past, he has held leadership positions at other healthcare companies, including Teladoc Health and Talkspace.

Cityblock Health appointed Michael Roaldi as its new president. He is joining Cityblock following nearly a decade in leadership roles at UnitedHealth Group, where he most recently served as chief growth officer at UnitedHealthcare Community & State.

Confluent Health appointed two new leaders: Mark Steiger as COO and Peter Carino as chief commercial officer. Steiger is joining the company from Optum, where he most recently served as chief operating officer of Optum Behavioral Care.

Define Ventures welcomed former Humana CEO Bruce Broussard as a new venture partner.

Lumeris hired David Carmouche as its new chief clinical transformation officer. Before Lumeris, Carmouche held leadership roles at Walmart, Ochsner Health and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana.

OMNY Health welcomed Ivy Weng as its chief commercial officer. She is joining the company from Komodo Health, where she most recently served as group vice president of life sciences.

Walgreens hired Jason Stenta as its new chief commercial officer. In the past, he has held leadership positions at CVS Health, Change Healthcare and Optum — serving most recently as senior vice president of payer sales at Optum Insight.

Promotions

CVS Health appointed David Joyner as its new CEO. Over the past couple of decades, he has held a variety of positions at CVS brands, including Aetna and Caremark. He most recently served as president of CVS Health’s pharmacy services division. He is replacing Karen Lynch, who stepped into the CEO role in 2021 and is now a member of the board.

The FDA named Michelle Tarver as permanent director of its Center for Devices and Radiological Health. She joined the FDA in June of last year as the center’s chief transformation officer.

Exits

Providence CIO BJ Moore announced that he is leaving the health system to pursue new opportunities. Moore has served as Providence’s CIO for nearly six years. Before that he worked at Microsoft for more than a decade.

Layoffs

Bassett Healthcare in Upstate New York is eliminating 100 administrative jobs.

Blue Shield of California is laying off 61 employees, which is less than 1% of the company’s workforce.

CVS Health is planning layoffs for about 2,900 workers as part of a cost-cutting program. These layoffs, which affect less than 1% of the organization’s overall workforce, are happening primarily in corporate roles.

Elevance Health is laying off 123 employees in California. 

Emanate Health, a California health system, is eliminating 107 roles, 63 of which are part-time, per diem, and full-time positions across the organization. The other 44 layoffs will be a result of the closure of Emanate Health Home Care and Emanate Health Imaging.

Kaiser Permanente is laying off 20 workers across several locations in California. These layoffs are primarily impacting employees in IT and business function roles. 

Steward Health Care is laying off 255 employees at its Phoenix-based St. Luke’s Behavioral Health Center.
