Improving medication adherence has long been a priority for big pharma and healthcare providers, so it was interesting to see that of all the mobile health applications Google’s Smartwatch could have used, MediSafe became a priority for its wearables platform, too.

MediSafe provided some details about how its app works on the Android Wear, which also marks the company’s first wearables agreement for its virtual pillbox.

Users with either the LG Android Wear, Samsung Gear Live or Moto 360 smartwatches, who also have the MediSafe medication management solution installed on their Android smartphone or tablet, automatically have a MediSafe wearable app loaded on their Android Wear. They start to receive medication reminders on their smartwatch when it’s time to take scheduled doses. They can confirm they have taken the scheduled dose by either rotating their wrists from left to right or by swiping left on their reminder and tap to confirm.

The idea is that a medication reminder that’s worn by users will help patients adhere to care plans. The hope is that it will reduce the likelihood that patients will forego their medication and in turn trigger complications that produce $290 billion in unnecessary healthcare costs, each year.

The mobile health company is also looking for partnerships with sensor-based wearables, which would help it use health data, such as users’ blood glucose levels and sleep patterns, with its own data for when users took their medications, according to a company statement. That info could give physicians a fuller picture of patients’ health toward making more informed decisions about their care.

In February, the Israeli mobile health company rolled out an API that makes it possible to integrate its medication adherence tools with electronic health records.

It has also developed branded versions of its device for hospitals and HMOs that send patients medication reminders via the web or SMS.
