How have all of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge donations actually been used following last year’s craze?

For the 2.5 million people who donated after participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge, how is that money being spent?

It’s been about a year since the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge started spreading across the country through social media.

“More than 17 million people participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge to support ALS and other causes,” As CNN reported. “Nationally, 2.5 million people donated $115 million to the ALS Association. The organization says the event was probably the single largest episode of giving outside of a disaster or emergency.”

So, how is that money being spent?

The ALS Association says about 40 percent of the ice bucket money, $47.1 million, has been spent or budgeted toward specific purposes. All of the $115 million is planned to be designated to five specific spending “buckets.” The majority is being dedicated to further research.

The ice bucket sensation has clearly made a huge difference. It’s fascinating to know that we are in a world where shared YouTube videos can be such a catalyst for change.
