New things have been happening in the realm of health IT, particularly with two top vendors.

Kansas City, Missouri-based Cerner hired David Waltman, a former VA executive, according to Politico.

Waltman first came to the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2011. He served there until 2013 and worked on the iEHR project. He then briefly went to work for ASM Research, part of Accenture, but came back to the VA as chief information strategy officer in 2014. In that capacity, he worked on modernizing VistA. Last November, Waltman left the VA again to serve as chief strategy officer for AbleVets, an IT company.

In his new role at Cerner, Waltman will focus on government strategy, innovation, compliance and engineering efforts.

Meanwhile, Watertown, Massachusetts-based athenahealth also experienced a major change in leadership. Last Friday, the company announced its CFO, Karl Stubelis, will be stepping down to pursue other opportunities.

Stubelis was appointed CFO a little more than a year ago. He replaced Kristi Matus, who served as atheanhealth’s chief financial and administrative officer.

In Stubelis’ place, John “Jack” Kane will serve as interim CFO, effective July 21. Kane is currently a member of athenahealth’s board of directors and the chair of the board’s audit committee.

In a statement, athenahealth CEO Jonathan Bush commented on Stubelis’ departure:

This CFO transition reflects our commitment to ensuring that athenahealth has world-class leaders to support the company and our increased scale and scope. We intend to focus our CFO search on leaders who bring a record of operating discipline and value-creating capital allocation. I look forward to working closely with the athenahealth Board, especially Jack Kane and Tom Szkutak, former CFO of Amazon, to identify the best individual for the role.

With the help of DHR International, athenahealth will start searching for a permanent CFO.
