Health tech startup Feedtrail, which is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, has raised $1 million in a funding round led by Dioko Ventures. Participation also came from “a major nonprofit health system and a convertible promissory note,” according to a news release.

Founded in 2015, Feedtrail offers a real-time patient feedback platform. The company’s tool, which is web and mobile-based, sends out patient satisfaction surveys during medical visits. In other words, patients typically access the survey via a link in a text message they get while on-site. Providers in a clinic or outpatient setting can choose to have patients fill out the survey prior to being discharged.

The patient responses are stored on a secure, cloud-based server. Organizations can view the feedback via Feedtrail’s dashboard and assess comments with an artificial intelligence text analytics engine.

The platform allows healthcare organizations’ staff members to directly message patients. Additionally, the solution sends employees alerts about negative patient feedback, and any department-specific notifications are sent to the appropriate on-duty staffers.

Not only does Feedtrail seek to help healthcare organizations improve patient satisfaction rates, but it also aims to help clients save money through patient retention.

The North Carolina startup’s customers include organizations of various sizes, including health systems, community hospitals, cancer institutes and concierge medicine practices, among others. The company’s technology has been implemented at more than 30 health systems, including Inova Health System, Wake Forest Baptist Health and WakeMed Health & Hospitals.

With the $1 million in funding, Feedtrail intends to hire sales and marketing employees and scale its platform.

In a statement, Feedtrail CEO Paul Jaglowski commented:

This fundraising gives us the bandwidth to pursue new business, and it is recognition that the path we’re on is the right one. From the day Feedtrail was founded, it has been our mission to provide powerful insights into our customers’ patient experience and influence better health outcomes across the spectrum of care. User-friendly technology has become ubiquitous, and we are using that technology to strengthen the patient-provider relationship and deliver an effective solution for some of healthcare’s most serious, yet avoidable problems.

Looking ahead, the startup plans on raising a Series A round during the first half of 2020.

It’s not the only entity in the healthcare world tackling patient feedback. Another startup, New York City-based Rivews, helps healthcare organizations engage with patients after care through text messages. Its offering works like this: After leaving a healthcare facility, patients are sent a survey about their experience via text message. Individuals can then respond with a number rating and provide additional comments via text. Providers can log in to the Rivews portal to see how patients are responding as well as to cross-compare data points and learn which facilities are getting certain ratings.
