With the Rise of AI, What IP Disputes in Healthcare Are Likely to Emerge?
Munck Wilson Mandala Partner Greg Howison shared his perspective on some of the legal ramifications around AI, IP, connected devices and the data they generate, in response to emailed questions.
Blue Shield of California named Jigar Shah as its new chief marketing officer. He spent the past year as founder and CEO of Trusana, a mental health platform spun out by Providence. Before that, he served as Providence’s chief marketing officer.
Cambia Health Solutions appointed Mike Rains as its new CFO. He comes to the company from Elevance Health, where he served as CFO for its government business division.
DexCare, a startup that gives health systems a platform that helps them coordinate and manage digital care services, appointed Robin Borg as chief people officer. She has held senior leadership positions at various healthcare companies, including Optum and Boston Scientific.
Kidney care management company Interwell Health welcomed Daymon Smith as its first chief product and technology officer. He previously held roles at Verily, Healthgrades and Evariant.
A Personalized Approach to Medication Nonadherence
At the Abarca Forward conference earlier this year, George Van Antwerp, managing director at Deloitte, discussed how social determinants of health and a personalized member experience can improve medication adherence and health outcomes.
Tennessee-based health system Lifepoint Health named Chris Hutchins as its first ever chief data and analytics officer. He comes to Lifepoint from New York-based Northwell Health, where he had the same title.
Lucet, a behavioral health company that was originally founded by a handful of Blue plans, appointed Brian Doheny as its new COO. In the past, he held senior leadership positions at Humana, CommonSpirit Health and Ascension.
Columbus, Ohio-based Nationwide Children’s Hospital welcomed Nelson Weichold as its new CFO. This isn’t his first time as a health system CFO — he’s held the role at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, as well as the University of Miami Medical Center.
New Orleans-based Ochsner Health appointed two new leaders. Jim Molloy will become the health system’s new CFO and Tiffany Murdock will become its new chief nursing officer. Molloy is joining the system from Citi, where he serves as managing director and head of municipal banking. Murdock will join Oschner after about eight years at Mississippi-based Singing River Health System. Last year, Murdock became Singing River’s first ever female CEO.
Providence Health Plan named two new executives. The health plan welcomed Lina Saadzoi as the new CFO and Timshel Tarbet as its first chief equity officer. Saadzoi spent more than 23 years at Blue Shield of California, where she most recently served as vice president and general manager for Medicare. Tarbet joined Providence Health Plan from SCAN Health Plan, where she most recently served as vice president of business excellence and diversity strategy. Before that, she spent about 16 years at Cambia Health Solutions.
Tenet Healthcare found a replacement for CFO Daniel Cancelmi, who will retire at the end of the year after a decades-long career at the organization. Sun Park will take over the role. He is joining Tenet from AmerisourceBergen, where he served as group CFO for pharmaceutical distribution and strategic global sourcing.
Work Health Solutions, which provides concierge-style occupational medicine for large-scale employers, named Peter Lee as its new CEO. He recently served as Amazon’s global medical director.
Promotions
EmpiRx Health, a value-based pharmacy benefit manager, promoted Danny Sanchez to the role of CEO. He joined the company earlier this year as president. Sanchez has about two decades of experience in the healthcare sector, including at companies such as McKesson and Omnicell.
North Carolina-based Novant Health welcomed Dr. Pam Oliver as its new chief medical officer. An OB-GYN by training, she began practicing at Novant in 2005.
Solv, a company focused on giving patients access to same-day appointments, promoted Teresa Asma to the role of COO. She joined Solv in 2021 as vice president of finance. Before that, she worked at companies such as Google, Intel and Verily.
Exits
Marlow Hernandez stepped down from his role as CEO of Cano Health, a senior-focused primary care provider. The company was embroiled in some drama earlier this year when three of the company’s board members resigned in protest of its governance strategy and called for Hernandez to be replaced. Mark Kent, Cano’s COO, has taken over in the interim.
Layoffs
Primary care startup CityBlock Health laid off 155 employees, which is about 12% of its workforce.
Gig nursing platform CareRev has plans to lay off about 100 members of its staff, which is about a third of its employee base.
Pennsylvania-based Geisinger laid off 47 people from its IT department. The job cuts were part of a restructuring plan that seeks to offset high costs for labor and supplies.
Marshfield Clinic Health System, based in Wisconsin, said it plans to lay off 346 employees, which is almost 3 percent of its staff. The system cited cost concerns and revenue pressures.
Oracle is reportedly letting go of hundreds of its Cerner employees. Some reports say these job cuts are a result of the trouble the company is having rolling out a new EHR for the VA, but Oracle has not confirmed this.
